Velocity is our annual employability and networking event designed to help students build confidence, develop key work readiness skills and connect with employers.
Through practical challenges, teamwork and employer interaction, students gain real insight into the skills businesses value most – all in a supportive, engaging and motivating environment.
Why we run Velocity
Developing employability skills is a key part of every Buckinghamshire College Group Study Programme. Velocity brings this learning to life by giving students the opportunity to:
- Apply their skills in real-world scenarios
- Meet and learn from local employers
- Build confidence outside the classroom
- Explore future career and progression opportunities
Buckinghamshire has a high proportion of small and microbusinesses, which can make it harder for students to access employers and work experience. Velocity helps bridge that gap by bringing students and employers together in one place, accelerating networking, work experience opportunities and, in some cases, future job offers.
We are ambitious for our students to achieve more than they ever thought possible – and at Velocity, every student is treated like a VIP.
Work Readiness Skills at Buckinghmashire College Group
Local employers have identified seven key Work Readiness Skills they look for when recruiting. These skills are embedded into our curriculum to ensure students are well prepared for the workplace.
At Velocity, students strengthen these skills by:
- Recognising their strengths and areas for development
- Building confidence and communication skills
- Working collaboratively with peers from different courses
- Learning how to network professionally with employers
The event also supports students to progress along the Work Placement Ladder, helping them take meaningful steps towards work experience, industry placements and employment.
Who is Velocity for?
Velocity is primarily aimed at Level 3 Study Programme students, particularly those who do not have a mandatory work placement as part of their course.
Some Level 2 Study Programme students may also be invited where the event is appropriate to their learning and development.
The event is inclusive, and students with additional needs will be supported to ensure they can take part fully and confidently.
When and where does Velocity take place?
Velocity runs annually at an external venue, bringing together students from across different campuses and curriculum areas.
Each student attends for one full day, working in mixed-course groups to encourage collaboration, networking and fresh perspectives.
Specific dates, venues and group allocations are shared with students in advance each year.
