THE WIZ HITS TOWN

Date: 31/05/2005
Citizens of Chesham are preparing themselves for an invasion by some of the best loved characters from all our childhoods…Performing Arts students from Amersham & Wycombe College will be lighting up the Elgiva Theatre next week with their production of The Wiz, the musical based on L F Baum’s classic tale The Wizard of Oz.

The students, who are completing their HND Performing Arts: Musical Theatre, are ready to rock the Elgiva to the rafters with this funky and hip production, which follows the all-singing and all-dancing yellow brick road to meet the Wizard of Oz. The Wiz will whisk children into a magical fairytale and their parents back into their childhood imaginations, as they meet a colourful cast of characters including:-

• Dorothy – played by Bonnie Hurst
• Tin Man – played by Richard Brown
• Scarecrow – played by Katrina Ellis
• Cowardly Lion – played by Richard Gambles
• Aunty Em – played by Andrea Campusano

The evil Evilyn is portrayed in alternate performances by Claire Coffey and Deborah Warwick, while Evilyn’s nemeses Glinda and Addaperle are played by Sarah Lucken and Joanne Goddard.

Then, of course, there’s The Wiz, played by Lydia Pritchard, who has been performing since the tender age of 5 and has starred in Bugsy Malone, Parentcraft and People Zoo. Last but not least is Toto the dog, played by Lydia’s own dog Phoebe – who is used to lead roles, having already starred in Annie.

The Wiz is directed by Amanda Goldthorpe-Hall and choreographed by Bobbie Chatt. It runs at the Elgiva Theatre, Chesham, from 9-11 June (7.30pm each evening, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm).
