MUSICAL THEATRE - BA(HONS)

Performing Arts : Higher Education
This course is designed as a third year practical and theory based programme for students who have completed an HND or Foundation Degree, or two years of a BA programme in a related discipline. Tutors at this advanced level have very high level expertise and experience in their subject area, and often are professionals currently working in the industry. The course is also supported by visits from visiting practitioners, such as casting directors and agents.

Content

Typically, modules may include:

Core modules:

o Critical Theory & Dissertation
o Major Theatrical Production

Optional modules:

o Integrated Disciplines in Musical Theatre – A practical based module which explores the skills and theoretical underpinning of the contemporary musical theatre performer. Advanced Acting, Advanced Dance and Advanced Singing form part of this module.

o Musical Theatre Performance Studies – A practical based module which explores the skills needed to work in contemporary theatre both as a musical theatre performer and in drama. Advanced Singing, Advanced Acting and also Script and Text Analysis form part of this module.

The Critical Theory and Dissertation module underpins and contextualises the study throughout the year, bridging the gap between the typical HND or Foundation Degree experience and this necessarily more academic final year of undergraduate study. The Dissertation enables you to explore an aspect of the performing arts which inspires you.

The year culminates in the Major Theatrical Production Module, in which you undertake a large scale piece of theatre, usually performed at a professional venue.
