Looking for a career in the Police, Fire Service, Ambulance Service, Prison Service, Army, Royal Navy, RAF or Marines?
Our public services study programmes are exciting, active and vibrant and will provide you with all the support and guidance you need to get you qualified and employed, or for you to succeed in your application to university. You will also enjoy the specialist units such as outdoor and adventurous expeditions, fitness training, expedition skills and water-based activities.
Learning will be varied and creative with an emphasis on practical skills, teamwork and fitness. Assessment is via 100% coursework-based projects and there are no exams. Visits will be made to public service organisations and guest speakers will be invited to talk about their public service experiences.
What do our students and parents say about us?
Former Public Services student Bradley Gibbs is now a PCSO for Thames Valley Police and says ‘The first stage of training was actually quite similar to what was taught on the Public Services course, so this gave me a good head start with my training’.
Diane Savage – ‘Thank you so much, my son would never have gained his place at University without you”.
Dana Montgomery – “I would like to thank the Sports & Public Services team for the time and support you gave my son, the work experience placement you provided did wonders. My son has since gone on to find full time employment and all of this would not have been possible without your support.”
Suzy Meller – “Thank you for all your help assisting my son this last year. He has started an apprenticeship, however, he is not ruling out a Forces career in the future.”
What do Ofsted say about us?
OFSTED – ‘There are good practical skills development, high standards of work and successful progression into higher education or employment in Public Services.’
OSTED – ‘Teachers and specialist staff provide very good personal support to learners, especially those at risk of not completing their courses and those with high needs, and this has led to improved achievements’.
OFSTED – ‘Teachers expect learners to give their best throughout the year and challenge them to go beyond the minimum requirements of their qualifications. This results in both good achievements and successful outcomes in respect of employment or higher education’.
Our Public Services students are currently engaged in a four-year project centred on tracing the history of Flackwell Heath servicemen following their lives from the Buckinghamshire village to the frontline in mainland Europe. During Remembrance Week 2015, staff and students visited the final resting places in Belgium and France of Flackwell Heath soldiers who gave their lives in the service of their country. This visit included wreath laying ceremonies at the Menin Gate, Hooge Crater Memorial and Tyne Cot Cemetery and placing of remembrance crosses at the graves or memorials of fallen Flackwell Heath soldiers.
The students and staff then attended the Flackwell Heath Remembrance Parade as part of their ongoing Commemoration Project and students laid 13 remembrance cards for soldiers from Flackwell Heath who fell during the First World War as well as a wreath from the college which was laid by student Alex Wilsdon.
During a battlefield walking tour over the Easter break, three unknown soldiers whose remains were uncovered in a field in Belgium were remembered by the students and staff who were invited to attend the re-burial of the soldiers, who were found in a farmer’s field in Wijtschate, Belgium. British Ambassador to Belgium – “Good to see Public Services students getting involved in the re-burial of three unknown soldiers from the First World War”.
