Who is the course for?

You should hold an appropriate grade at a Level 3 computing course (or the equivalent 3 A-levels). This course is an excellent way to develop your skills and knowledge in this area.

Edexcel BTEC HNDs offer a strong, sector-related emphasis on practical skills development, alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding.


What will this course lead to?

You can either progress on to a top up year for a full higher education qualification, go on to an apprenticeship, or go directly into work in the IT sector.


Course content includes

Business Skills for e-Commerce: You will develop an understanding of the structure and aims of business organisations, and an understanding of the impact of - and be able to design - e-Commerce solutions.

Computer Systems: The course looks at the function and design of computer systems. You will build and configure computer systems, as well undertaking routine maintenance.

Employability and Professional Development: You will learn to take responsibility for your own personal and professional development, and develop interpersonal and transferable skills in working with others and developing strategies for problem solving.

Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation

There are further optional units which may include: Systems Analysis and Design, Digital Media, Web Design, Object Oriented Programming, Designing a SOHO Network, Programming, WAN Technologies, Computer Games Design and Development, Digital Imaging, Web Applications Development.


Entry requirements

You will be over 18, you will have achieved a BTEC Level 3 qualification in a related discipline (e.g. IT Practitioners, Software or Networks), grade level MMM or above. Alternatively, 3 A-Levels at ‘C’ Grade or above and GCSE (or equivalent) in English & Maths at Grade ‘C’ or above are acceptable. Mature students will need to have a skillset related to the course: for example, software development, web design, digital media or networking.


How will I be assessed?

The HND is continuously assessed throughout the course, through a series of coursework assignments. Emphasis is placed on the ability to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of your topics.


What equipment/materials do I need to buy?

You will need to have a computer with appropriate software loaded for the course. This will include the current Microsoft Office suite. Any other software requirements will be discussed with you at your interview. Some of the reading list will be available on the College library system.
