Student Achievement Celebrated at Annual Awards Ceremony

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

The achievements of Amersham & Wycombe College Students were celebrated at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Marlow during November with an awards ceremony for over 80 learners.  Students received awards for High Attainment, Progression, Commitment and Determination amongst others at the awards evening in front of an audience of over 250.

Students from all faculties were nominated by their tutors to receive the awards which were presented by Principal, Gill Clipson and Counsellor Mimi Harker OBE, Mayoress of Amersham.

“The awards ceremony is the perfect opportunity to recognise the wonderful achievements of our students,” said Gill Clipson. “We are celebrating the success of students who have achieved their qualifications and those who have had to overcome difficulties and contributed in so many other ways, because we appreciate personal progression can follow many routes, not just academic.  Many of our students study while they work and are supported by forward thinking employers who recognise the value of – and invest in – training and developing their staff.  The college works with many such employers and I was delighted to present Pinewood Studios and Little Acorns Kindergarten with an Employer Award for consistently investing in their staff.”

Typical of the recipients at the awards event was Music student Kristina Foot from Amersham.  Not only was she singing at the event with guitarist and fellow award winner Luke Quincey, but she also picked up an award for her Contribution to the College and Wider Community. “Kristina goes above and beyond what’s expected of her, has a thirst for knowledge and is a real asset for the college,” said her music lecturer Sarah Hayden.  “Her contribution and attitude were key influencing factors in appointing her to head up an innovative new events department for fellow musicians within the college.”

Many students attending made a special trip back home from university or place of work and had interesting stories to tell.  None more so than High Attainment award winner Robyn Osborne who had raced back from the Trampoline & Tumbling World Championships in Birmingham where she finished in the top 10 in Mini Double Trampoline.  Robyn is the 2011 British MDP champion and a current A Level student.
